Power-steering on 560

The power-steering on my 560 is horrible. I have a wide-front end and a loader so with all that weight, I have to be in at least 2nd gear to turn the wheel (or raise the front end with loader). I replaced the hydraulic pump and the steering pump - even jumped from the 12 gpm to 17 gpm and my steering isn't any better. Is it the control valve? Help! I'm $350 in the hole and still can't turn. (got "bench tested" pumps from Cook Tractor in Clinton, MO)

Added info: Loader and fasthitch work - carrying round bales easily - but loader wouldn't pick up my mower-conditioner or baler but that might have been asking too much anyway. Fasthitch slowly drops when tractor is shut off if something is attached (finish mower).

Thanks in advance,

Jason

Jason if the shaft in the front bolster is not free to move in and out a little then the valve can not open and you will have no power steering so rock the steering shaft back and forth to see if the splined shaft moves in and out.

I had a similar problem on my 460. Follow the hydraulic lines to under the radiator to a small block. That is the steering cylinder. It unbolts from the frame and has a lever which goes up into the housing. When it's off take it apart and make sure the internal cylinder isn't gummed up and that the lever is actually on the pin. Make sure that you have the little O rings for the hydraulic lines before starting though. They will probably fall apart when you disconnect the lines. My lever had worked itself off the pin and the steering wasn't working at all.

As you have discovered, there are separate hydraulic and power steering pumps. Installing the larger 17 GPM hydraulic pump will have no affect on the power steering.

Beyond that, I can't help you other than checking the troubleshooting section in the I&T manual for the 460/560.

On second thought, I remember one thing. When I replaced the hydraulic pump recently in our 460, inspection of the power steering pump revealed that it has an integral pressure relief mechanism. It is a simple ball/spring arrangement held in place by a slotted, wide diameter screw. This may be worth exploring, but if the symptoms have not changed after installing a new pump, then I suspect the problems is elsewhere. I would assume that a bench tested pump would have the pressure relief mechanism installed and adjusted accordingly.

Yeah, I didn't think the 17 gpm pump would make the steering work better than the 12 gpm but I was hoping my pump(s) were bad and replacing both of them would fix my problem. It seemed logical to me. I got the 17 gpm instead of the 12 gpm because I wanted more power for lifting round bales, scooping up dirt, and whatever else.

Thanks,
Jason

I am curious about the 17 GPM pump. I've not seen one. Is it physically larger than the 12 GPM pump? I was wondering how the pump got its higher rating.

Thanks for everyones advice, I'll keep digging - will take the steering cylinder out next and go from there.

The 17 gpm pump is the same size as the 12 gpm pump. I don't know what's different inside that gives it the higher rating. I'm anxious to move some dirt with the loader and see if it lifts easier, but I'm hoping to have some power-steering first.

-had to change my name, someone reserved "Jason".

Ok, I took the control valve down and tore it apart; found a washer in about 8 pieces. It's the one that goes on the clevis, one of the two that squeezes the seal inside the cylinder. I replaced all o-rings, seals, and washers, put it back together and now I have power-steering when turning right. Good thing I have a sense of humor, it never ends. What now? I'm going to look through the archives, thought I'd seen this discussed here before. Maybe I didn't get the actuating lever in place correctly...The U-joint looks good. Thanks again.

Jason
