Found an 856 with the word "Custom" at the top of the black emblem located on the lower right and left hand sides of the hood where it also says "856." Usually it has "Farmall" over the top. What does this mean? I have never seen "Custom" over the top of any of the 56 series.

One more difference is the air cleaner. I belive that the 856 Custom only had a small canister with a single element. I know that the fuel tank on the Customs was 37 gallons, while regular 856's had 42 gallon tanks. The last 856 Custom I saw had 16.9x38 rear rubber with the clamp-style wheels, while most regular 856's have wedge-lock rear wheels.

Differences were: only one light in each fender, smaller fuel tank, only one remote valve, angle battery hold down rather than cover, and I believe only red light on rear, all if I remember correctly. TA was optional on all 856's, not just Customs.

Also remembering, clamp wheels on Custom vs wedge lock on regular 856, 16.9 std on Custom vs 18.4 std on regular 856.

Ken Updike's book says the TA was STANDARD on the 856 custom -- Page 61, left column, second paragraph. In addition to the smaller fuel tank, it also had smaller air filter. Never knew what a JD 4000 was until I read this thread.

Most all Farmall's we sold in that era were sold without TA. TA was optional on all Farmall's at that time.

IH put this out to compete with the JD 4000. It's a stripped down 856, they also made a 756 custom.
They only had two lights in the fenders, can't recall what else they left off of them.
pretty sure this is correct, RLS
