I have to drive past a nice 666 farmall every day at the local dealer. Nice looking tractor with nearly new tires and good paint. I have thought that that would be a good size tractor for my operation. Only one problem, it"s a gasser. Any of you fellows have one of these in a gas? How hard are they on gas compared to the diesel? I figure that I should probably wait for a diesel.

My dad bought a new 656 gas in 1966. Was a real nice tractor to operate but couldn't keep valves in it. Required 3 valve jobs in 1500 hours at which point he traded it for a 4020 JD.

I would wait for a diesel unless you just want it for light loader work ect. If you work it hard it will stick or burn valves plus kill your pocket book with fuel bills. Putting in a diesel would work if you have a parts tractor for the rear engine plate, fuel tank, throttle linkage ect. might be costly to find all the needed parts. I have a 686 with the 312 and its my favorite tractor, like it more than my 7810 deere. I raked 200 acres of first crop hay with a 10 wheel v rake on less than 1 tank of fuel, can't beat that!

Thanks for the advice guys. I thought that was probably the case, but just needed to hear it from good sources to make myself believe it.

Actually, that is probably why the tractor looks so good, the owner couldn"t afford to run it.

Carp: Just a thought, and I've never looked very deeply into doing something like this, but if these gassers could be bought at the right price, a guy could look at doing a diesel repower. You could be exactly right on the tractor being used very little. The tractor may in fact be in much better condition than a lot of the diesels. Looking at it from that point of view, you would either have to buy cheap or be content with an expensive tractor after the change over to diesel. I guess its really about the cost of the finished product, and the fact each project must be judged on it's own merrit.

Only problem is that he wants 5,800 for it. I would say that is a more than fair price if it were diesel for the shape it"s in but maybe a little steep for gas. I"m guessing it would probably cost quite a bit to change to a diesel engine, and thats if I got lucky and found a decent engine in a combine or swather or something. I would imagine any engine that you got out of a junked 560 or 656-86 would need serious work. Probably better off to just be patient. I have the ole 450 to handle the heavy stuff till I get something a little easier on fuel.

Carp: I don't think you would find that 666 gas to be much improvment over the 450 on the power end. As you know, I've always called these tractors an M with comfort, and lord knows I better say more power. Got crucified for omiting the power issue last time I said it. There was a clear evolution from M, SM, SMTA, 400, 450, 560, 656, 666 and 686. It went from basically a bare bones M, adding items like live hydraulics, IPTO, TA, Fast Hitch, power steering, 3 point hitch, six cylinder and finally comfort. On the diesel side you can also add going from gas start, to glow plugs to direct injection. The 3 point hitch on these 56, 66 and 86 series versions are second to none. They changed the wide front steering linkage on these making them allmost as manuverable as a narrow front.

I remember just after getting my 656, it was parked in a relatively small shed for size of the tractor. A friend dropped in for a visit, an avid MF 35 - 135 man. Refering to the 656, he said' " how do you like the ark." to which I responded," I have a tractor just as agile as yours in the hayfield, and it will pull a 5x16 plow and I'll bet it doesn't burn as much fuel per acre as your beloved 35."

Send me an e mail, I have a site listing for quite a number of these tractors, some of them not far from you. You can also let me know if that land mail arrived. Just want to be satisfied.

Carp: KB is right those three tractors (656, 666, 686) have both extreems. Probably the most efficient diesel you could ever own, and the least efficient in the gas version. I'm told by several sources the gassers didn't measure up on power either.

My 656D or 560D would run between 1 and 1.5 Can gallons per hour on haying work. That would increase a bit on tillage work, but I don't think they ever hit the 3 gallon mark. I plowed 7-8 inches deep with 656D and 5x16 semi mount plow, and I've seen it go 12 hours on that 33 US gal tank. 656D on 9' haybine 1 Can gallon per hour all day everyday. Our gallon when we had it was 5 of your quarts. By all means wait until you find a diesel.

Carp, Hugh is right my 460D, 236 cid will pull a left and right New Holland rake all day on 1/2 gal an hr. My 756D Ger. 310CID will pull a 10 tooth chisel on just over 3 Gal an hr.

I've spent alot of time around the six-cylinder gassers, also a 686 diesel (German engine). 666 gas will be one of the least fuel-efficient tractors you could ever own, while a 666 diesel would be one of the most fuel-efficient tractors you could ever find. Figure about 5 gallons per hour no matter what with the gasser, and about 5 under a very heavy load with the diesel, probably less than 3 for light work. Wait for a nice 656, 666, or 686 diesel, you won't regret it.

Carp,

If you plan on using it for heavy tillage, it will probably eat you alive in fuel costs. It would make a great handy-andy tractor, tho.
