Hello all,
I have had 2,3,4,5,6 and 8 cylinder diesels. I must say though I am partial to 6 bangers.

I finally got my 460 home and yes it looks like a tractor that has spent most of its life outside. I got it to farm with so I am not too concerned about how it looks. The motor was rebuilt 200 (?) hours ago. Starts and runs okay, TA seems fine....Here are some questions
1) Valve lash? Hot or cold?
2) Can I get in and set valves with the fuel tank on, or do I need to remove it?
3) It has a weak injector, starts on 5 but warms up and runs on 6, could that injector cause the knocking pinging noise that it makes only at idle no load?
4) Brakes are weak and fully adjusted in but still have low pedal...what do I need to fix this?
5) How can I get the most life out of my TA ?
6)Is there a drawbar hitch that fits underneath, but not to my fasthitch?
7)This is a WFE tractor without the tires loaded, roughly what does it weigh?
8) Any tricks to swapping out the water pump?
9) Where can I find a wirring diagram?

thanks all,

john

My $.02.

Valves are set hot, not sure of spec and they can be set with tank on but I usually prop up the fuel tank with a 2X4 or similar between clutch housing and tank frame until I get head re-torqued and valves set and the cover back on.

To get the most life out of your TA, USE IT!!! Pull the lever back fully and quickly, push it ahead the same way. The weakest part of the TA is the ramp/roller assembly (overrunning clutch). Moving the lever quickly lets the rollers do their job. I don’t know where you live, but if you live in a colder climate, let the transmission warm up before you try to use the TA. DON’T step on the clutch, pull the TA and then “dump” the clutch (like shifting from 4th to 5th gear), as this puts an abrupt load on the ramp/rollers and can cause them to not bite, slip and wear a flat spot that will only get worse.

A drawbar from a letter model IH will fit and you can take the fast hitch off including under the belly and replace it with even the pull block for a swinging drawbar.

John I have a 460D that I have had for close to if not 30 years. It has never started on more than 4 cyl, even with rebuilt Inj. and pump, and Ohaul on eng. Once it is hitting on all 6 you will never hear a smoother running eng.

I can help with a few of these. Valve lash, I can check and get back to you. I do belive that you can get the valve cover off without pulling the tank, but it is a tight fit. Injectors are cheap to rebuild/replace, try that and see if things change, as far as starting on five, how long do you use the glow plugs? You should have them on for at least sixty seconds before starting no matter what the outside temp. is, and you should continue to hold them on until the engine runs smooth and the smoke clears up. Check your glowplugs. Those brakes were always kind of troublesome. Disassemble, clean them up. Water pump replacement is very easy and straightforward. Your nearest Case-IH dealer will have a wiring diagram for your 460. They should be more than happy to make you a copy.

Valve lash is .027" hot for both the intakes and exhaust.
