W4 crankcase has something in it??

Hi,

Yesterday I was changing the oil in our W4 (standard) to get ready for harvest (I use it to run an auger). I found a piece of a shim or something partly blocking the oil drain plug. I fished it out with my finger and got a piece out that is about an inch long, about 0.025" thick and looks like it might have been about 3 or 4" in diameter when it was in one piece.

This was interesting enough, but I also encountered another object with my finger. Behind the oil drain plug is a large piece of metal that I can lift up - but only on one side. It feels like it could be 3 or 4" across and is not too heavy.

Is this supposed to be there? It feels like it could be some kind of float or baffle of some kind. Any ideas???

Thanks in advance!

Jeff

Any idea how many hours are on this motor ? Does the 'shim' look like part of a washer ? Could it be a piece of the flange from the center thrust bearing on the crank ? I don't know if that is even possible, but it is about the right size.

Having a look inside seems like a good idea.

I had a good look inside and I couldn't find anything similar to the "shim" piece or anything out of place. The centre thrust bearing flanges look much thicker.

Maybe the piece got left inside from a previous rebuild for all I know. The only thing I know for sure is that I scraped out about half a cup of sludge off the bottom of the oil pan.

It was a good learning experience anyway...

Thanks,

Jeff

I had a similar incedent on a Farmall M. What appeared to be a shim turned out to be part of the gear shift slide. Rather than attempting to do a rear end overhaul, I switched rear ends with another M.

This may be WAY off-base because I've never torn apart a W-4 engine so take this with caution, but could you be feeling the oil pump suction side pick up?

Just a guess

A W-4 uses the H engine. the large piece he feels is likely the oil pickup. the flat piece he got out I'm not sure about.

Yes the big thing was the oil pickup. I still haven't figured out the small piece (likely a shim - it is very soft though). Still struggling with the front axle support so I can get the pan all the way off.

Thanks,

Jeff

You should never, I repeat NEVER find anything in your oil pan except dirty oil. Pop that pan off and find out what is going on. It is possible that someone put shim stock behind one of the crankshaft bearings rather than get the correct bearing or grind the crankshaft to get the correct clearance and this may have worked out somehow. It could also be a plate or part of washer that is used to lock the main and/or connecting rod bolts to keep them from getting loose.

At any rate pull the pan and find out what is going on. My 2 cents…
