Need some help, got a 1953 super a with woods belly mower, after cutting grass 30-45 minuets it will start to sputter, once i engage the clutch, it will rev back up again, and then only gets worse when i engage mower again, i've checked/replaced gear oil, cleaned points, good spark, if i don't use the pto with the mower it runs fine all day long. Any ideas? thanks in advance. Shaun

Sounds like a problem under load. I can give a few suggestions. Check carb settings maybe need to change when hot. Or Plug Gap,Point gapped perfect I beleve 20 thousands as long as you have battery ignition. then maybe the coil but I would think if that was bad it would do it when it was hot not under a load but I could be wrong. Shaun, years ago before I did an overhaul on mine, I seem to remember mine doing the same. What I remember is finally taking the head off and cleaning carbon build-up, due to using what ever gas was laying around the place. Seems that under load, the deposits can glow and cause pre-ignition, when the engine would be under a steady load for a bit.

It stopped this habit, but I did double check the other possibles like point condition, gap and timing, plug range, cleaning the airfilter and making sure that the carb was clean. Going to a hotter plug seems to help with the deposit thing, or maybe I just use better judgement for gas and never using the can for the trimmer. It disappeared after cleaning the head and has never reappeared. I think I use UD-16 Champions for plugs.

By the way, could you, if not too much trouble send me a pick of your mower and setup for your tractor? It would be appreciated.

LW
