I have a Farmall H I am putting a belly mower on. I would like to design the belt drive system to drive off of the bely pulley gearbox on the tractor. Is this pully the same 540 rpm as the rear pto? Also I am wondering what grade of engine oil to run in it, is 15w-40 ok? It will get run at temps above 32 degrees and occasionally go to a tractor pull or two in the summer. The rear end oil...what is recomended for this? 80-90 or a straight 90w oil of a gl rating of 1? Any ideas on hangers or the drive train for this belly mower would be apprieciated. Thanks! Dave

I suppose if you are enough of an engineer and a fabricator then you could do it. The old #24 fully mounted corn picker was powered by a drive chain. The drive sprocket was powered from the belt pulley, the sprocket was bolted on in place of the actual pulley. Your idea is feasible but will take a lot of work to make it practical.

D.T..your oil can be 15w40 for that old tractor engine especially if it burns a little oil. Rear oil can be a 90 gear oil or the 80/90 version. I find Walmart usually has the best price on rear end oil around $29 for 5 gallons as opposed to $80 at the tractor dealers. I am not sure why you want to power your mower from the pulley belt although it can be done. Most belly mowers are designed to drive off the PTO and will come with the hook up to do this. Usually there is a gear box that bolts onto the drawbar or rear of the tractor, runs off of the PTO and v-belts to the mower deck. Good luck with your project....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Mike,
The reason I want to power the mower on the belt pully is it will leave the rear end free for me to hook onto a auger with out taking the mower off to do so. Thanks! Dave

The belt pulley spins twice as fast as the rear pto. So that would put you about 1080 on the belt pulley. Most kits for a belley mower come with a large pulley which is mounted on the rear pto to increase the belt speed. You should be able to set up a similar system on on the belt pulley... post pictures when you are finished!

Good excuse to purchase another tractor. It's not much of a task to pull the belt pully attached to the PTO shaft - a couple of minutes.
