I just repacked the water pump on my 44 H. I put the packings in so that the end gaps are on opposite sides so they dont line up. My question is how much do I tighten down on the packings? After I run the engine a while it starts to drip out the front of the pump. Can you tighten the packings too much?

The operator manual says to tighten the packing nut until the drip stops. Don't think you can ruin anything by tightening it too much. If it doesn't seal with reasonable tension on the nut I'd look at how the packing is installed.

The only problem I'm aware of with tightening the packing nut is that you may run out of threads. If you do, add another set of packing. This is what I did on my Super H and it worked fine.
