gas M vs diesel M engine rotation

There is a question that has been haunting me for years and in driving these tractors for years I never noticed but does the diesel engine of a MD turn the opposite direction of the gas version? Maybe everyone knows the answer except me, I do know that the exhaust is on the opposite side but wasn't sure and if so how do they handle PTO work and that would mean either a counter shaft or a totally different transmission setup. I figure there has to be some experienced IH mechanics that can set the record straight.

The ignition drive turns the opposite of the gas engine because the diesel has an idler gear in the gear train, while the gas engine does not. The -9 series engines (W-9, T-9, WD-9, and TD-9) have an idler in the gear train in both the gas and diesel engines and also have a reverse turning ignition drive for both.

Brian, can you put that in layman's terms? Are you saying the ignition drive train runs in the opposite direction but the crankshaft runs the same as a gas engine? The reason I was curious, I had a late old friend that was pulling a Super stock 5500# gas M and wanted to go to an alcohol burner and he said he would have liked to use a diesel block but was told it runs in the opposite direction and I told my brother in law and he said I thought you knew that,he had two MDs.Thanks!

Rotation direction of diesel is same a gasoline engine. All transmission, clutch, etc parts are the same as the gas. Thus if rotation were opposite, the PTO would be turning the wrong direction.

Don,

Almost all engines turn counter-clockwise as you are setting in the driver's seat.

An exception to this rule is that many marine applications will turn clockwise.

My 2 cents, too.

Allan

the engine rotates the same way as the gas models. the distributor to start them on gas will rotate the opposite way of the gas distributors. just put a crank in the front and they both crank the same way, clockwise when cranking tractor. my two cents worth
