This may not come as a shock to some of you but I have only lived in the country for 4 years so it horrified me. Last night, right around dusk I was driving home and noticed something in the tall grass at the side of the dirt road. There was a bit of motion and a flash of black and white so I slowed down for a better look. Lo and behold there were a bunch of kittens in the grass. Well, that got my undivided attention. Wife and I hopped out of car and went investigating. Sure enough, there was a rather hungry looking Momma cat and 4 kittens at the side of the road. As soon as we came near, the kittens came running over and pretty much jumped into our arms. Momma took off, but I will get her today, I know where she is. The way those cats responded, there is no way they are wild! There are no farms for about two miles in any direction. Someone dumped a cat and a litter of kittens in the ditch and left. It made me so mad that I barely slept last night. Needless to say we now have 4 barn cats and will likely have a 5th by end of day.

I am not really a cat person but there is no way those little guys are going to a shelter. The barn belongs to them now. On a good note, my mouse problems in the barn should go away.

Like I said, this dumping of animals may not be a shock to some and I know I have heard of it before but to see the results just infuriated me. There were so many other options!!

The other week my wife called and asked if baby skunks could spray.....yep, when I got home she had a whole litter of 'em, the mama had been killed. She took them to the animal rescue center. And the answer is YES they can spray!

I know you rescued cats, but hear in NW Missouri, it seems to be the puppies that get dumped. Dad found our dog (then a young pup, teeth not complete yet) at one of our binsites. The dog is loyal, friendly, and always happy to see you. Don't know why some people do things like that.

every now and them someone drops one or two off out my way. one of the neighbors has a few of them and she hates to take them to the shelter so she keeps most of them around. one young one headed over my place and my wife and daughter took a liking to it and took care of it for a couple of weeks. i'm not a real big cat fan, but i tolerate them. well, this little bugger would hang out in the garage all the time watching me work and coming over to see what i was doing (too bad my dumba&% dog can't behave like that). i actually kind of liked the little gal. well, some of the other neighbors have an opinion of stray cats like LMills and i believe one of them may have sent little kitty to visit the litter box in the sky. i do agree they do the number on wild bird and rabbit populations. i don't mind the cats killing mice, chipmunks and "tree rats" though.

In the very near future - you to will be getting rid of cats. Not only do they eat mice - they eat birds, baby rabbits, etc. Don`t even think of
having bird feeders in your yard - you will just be putting the little birds to death. Good Luck to you. Hope it works out

Sean, I have had this happen at least three times that a litter of hungry kittens has shown up at the farm, some dead on the road, some in the ditch, all dumped and on one occasion, a litter sick with destemper. This brings disease to my barn and it costs me money to clean up these animals, but I am a cat lover and penecillin usually does the job. I have about 15 cats right now, I feed them and I medicate them when necessary. There are no rats or mice in my buildings, I have never seen even a sign of a rodent, but it costs about $12 a week for cat food. Yes get them neutered. I would be better off with about 5 cats but once in a while a neighbour will take a couple for their barn and I keep just ahead of reproduction...if cattle coulld only reproduce like that. People who dump pets think that someone will care for them and they can live with their decision, but an animal that contacts destemper and is not treated can die a slow and agonizing death. They also bring disease into a barn where there is none....and Jesus said "forgive them for they know not what they do"...I'd like to catch somebody dumping animals I'd give them a time they would never forget! In meantime I as you, am a good Samaritan and will care for the animals as best I can...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Get used to it, people in town think the country side is perfect place to drop off cats and dogs (can't do it in town they'll find their way home). Hate to say it but the kids think I have returned several "stray" animals to their owners that have instead been put mercifully out of their misery and buried on a nearby farm. You can only take in so many.

Good to have barn cats around, but be sure to get them fixed ASAP. If there is a local shelter or SPCA, they may offer discounts or freebies for fixing them. A few barn cats or good, but it can get outta hand. Good luck with your rescues!

Just be sure to get them "fixed" or you will have an even bigger problem in a year or two. I have two young cats who are only 12 weeks old in the barn, and they are alreaady clearing out the mice.

Take Care
Steve
