I have a IH 384 tractor that when I put the gear in netural the tractor goes in reverse. If I move the gear shifter into any other gear, the tractor lugs and will die unless I push the clutch in. The PTO and hi-lo range works fine. It runs fine when I put the gear shift in netural, except I go backwards. This happened while I was backing up and then shifted into 2nd. Thanks for any help you might could provide.

Jeff,

You've got a shift rail out of time with the other rails.

Thanks Allan for the reply. Can I reach that rail from the top where the shifter is?

Allan,
Thanks for all your help. Got the shifter out last night and aligned the rails. Took the shifter to a welder to have the end increased, becuase it looked worn. Thanks again for your help.
Jeff

Jeff,

Yes, depending on your configuration, you can usually pull the shifter, then, get in there and line up the gate with a big pry-bar or large screwdriver.

Sorry, I've never owned one of the tractors like you have, but I have worked on thousands of trannys.
