Ok ive tried it all I think we have an ignition issue.
Can someone walk me thru the basics?new, wires, plugs, cap, rotor, points, wire harness the distributor was out,It hasnt run in 2.5 years(the motor is a 291) I bought it not to pull just to rake hay with, mow etc.
I would love to eat a big piece of humble pie if someone can help me get this thing started.
Please be specific(I used to think I knew something but apparently not)
thanks in advance

Things to check.

Is there voltage to the coil? If not there is a break in wire from switch to coil. If there is, check for spark (spark = bright blue ½” spark) from the high tension coil wire to a ground when the engine is cranked? If not, check to see if the points are opening, then replace condenser, then replace coil. If there is spark, check to see if there is spark at the spark plugs. If so, check timing of distributor. Turn the engine until # 1 cylinder is Top dead Center on compression stroke (air escaping from spark plug hole.) When pointer on front crankshaft pulley is at TDC, make sure that the rotor is turned towards the terminal on the distributor cap that the #1 spark plug wire goes to. Then make sure the wires are in the firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4. This should prove out the ignition system.

Good luck.
