300 hyd oil questions

What type of hydraulic oil should I use on the 300? I have a couple of H"s and the book says 30 wt, but I think the 300 needs hydraulic stuff.

The book indicates that you check the hyd oil level with a dipstick, my 300 has a hole that has a 1" pipe thread with a reducing bushing in it. The bushing has a plug in it. What does the dipstick look like? how long is it? how far from the bottom are the level marking(s)? Is it possible to buy one somewhere?
Thanks

CaseIH sells a fluid called Hy-Tran which is what you want for the hydraulic system on your 300U, capacity is about 3-1/2 gallons. "Full" is 2-1/2" down from the top of the reservoir (without the reducing bushing). If you"re going to change the fluid, it would make sense to also check out the screen (inside the reservoir) which is a typical problem area when the hydraulics on these tractors quit working - however, it"s not something you really want to do unless you"re having a problem.

The plug/dipstick is part #361867R11, perhaps available from CaseIH - if not, check with a salvage dealer.

You"ll be doing yourself a favor if you get an Operators Manual for this tractor (good ones available from Binder Books .com).

Good luck.

I also have a 300, is HY Tran the only fluid I can use or can I get something from my local Tractor Supply? Also the trans takes 10w oil and TA additive. Are these readily available at TS?

At this point, Hy-Tran goes into the hydraulics, transmission, and PTO on a 300U with TA. You are certainly free to use whatever brand you want, but I think most of the people on this forum will tell you to stick with the CaseIH fluid. IMHO it's probably more important to keep whatever you use clean and change it at a reasonable interval, but that's only my perhaps dumb opinion.
