Farmall oil pressure

My Farmall A starts out with good oil pressure around 65 or better. But after a while of running the pressure drops to about 15 to 20 pounds. I already pulled the oil pan to see if the pick up was blocked and that was not the problem. As for oil I am running 30W oil. The engine sounds great and does not knock or make any irreagular sounds. What could the problem be? Thanks for the help!!

I have owned my A for over 40 years it is semi retired now but I used it regularly for over 20 years. The hot oil pressue has allways been a little less than straight up on gauge at full throttle and allmost in red at idle. A timing gear set is all the work I have ever done on engine and it still runs great. If it stays out of red at hot idle I would not be concerned.

Just has the same problem with my 240, heres the fix. Get a new oil pump cover(aluminum and the old one will be warped) new pump cover gasket, and spring and you will set to go for another 30 years. What happens is the pump cover will get a little warp in it then the gasket will blow out, these gaskets are super thin so be careful put it back( looks like a piece of old rice paper)

In a previous post I had the same problem. Upon start up my pressure was 65 lbs. after running for about an hour it dropped to 10 to 15lbs. The motor didn't knock. It still bothered me. So I checked my crank shaft bearings with plastic gauge and found mine were out of spec. Put .002 oversize bearings in and it took care of the problem. Doesn't drop below 45 lbs when warm. Bearings were easy to change. If you need any more info. E-mail me at hoogienut@hotmail.com

Since the IH gauge doesn't show PSI, what is the range on one?

Obviously extreme left is 0 PSI, but what is extreme right?

It depends. I know least two IHC colored "zone" gage ranges have been used: 45 psi full scale, and 70 psi (or maybe 75?) full scale.

I know the larger supers (SH and SM) use the higher range gage - not sure what else.

I agree with Red Dave. 15 - 20 psi hot is entirely adequate. However if pressure drops to close to 0 at hot idle you probably should look into it.

A quick fix is to switch to higher viscosity multigrade oil (15W-40). That'll usually get you a few extra psi when the the motor is hot.

FWIW I had similar problem with a Super H - 55 psi at startup, but hot idle pressure would fall to just above 0. (And like your A the engine ran smooth and quiet...) Problem turned out to be main and crank bearings worn .002 - .003 beyond spec and a partially blown out oil pump gasket. After installing new bearings and replacing the pump gasket, hot idle pressure now holds at 20 - 25 psi.

Sometimes the flat plate on the bottom of the pump gets warped. If not the pump it's just worn engine bearings, rods and mains. It's still got lots of life left. Might try a 20-50 oil.

Joe, I don't remember what the book calls for, but 15 to 20 lbs when the engine is hot and running doesn't sound too bad to me.
Others may see it differently though.

I had the same type of thing on my “B” loosing oil pressure as it warmed up. It turned out to be a bad gasket in the oil pump.

I had an “M” that did the same thing, and it had a rod bearing starting to go out.

The best bet is to pull the pan, check the oil pump for a bad gasket, or excessive wear, and the crankshaft bearings. If those all look good, you will need to go further and check the camshaft bearings.

Good luck!
