I have a 46 farmall M that i recently painted. It charged fine before i painted it. i checked all the wires and connections and they are all good. It is 12 volt and the altinator is only a couple months old. The battery was new this spring, i disconected it for a couple of weeks for painting and put it back in and now it wont charge. Could the battery have lost it's charge just from those couple of weeks? the only way to get it started is to jump start it with my truck. Please Help If You Can Thanks

Other comments are valid. I just wanted to add that if after you jump start the tractor the alternator should start charging. With the tractor running, and the jumpers hooked up, turn on the lights and then disconnect the jumper cables. The ammeter should not show a discharge. If it does it is a problem in the alternator/electrical as system, possibly grounding issues as the others suggest.

Jon - Ditto to Wayne's comments below!

Note that most Delco alternators have a 10-32 threaded ground stud (labelled GND) on rear end. Good practice is to run a #12 wire from this stud a GOOD frame ground.

When you paint, it can act as an insulator so take off the alternator & mounting bracket & clean the paint off so it can get a decent ground path back to the battery.
Check any other mountings for good grounds also.
