fuel strainer removal, super C

My Super C was bought with no gas cap. I put one on and noticed sometimes it stalls for no good reason (both under load and when at idle), other days it runs fine, all day. Changed the oil, spark plugs, wires, distributor points, greased zerks, etc. Cleaned the strainer bowl and gummed out the carb. Put it all together and it ran fine for a day then started stalling and losing power again. Looked in the gas tank with a flashlight and observed stuff (feathers?) on the bottom of the tank. Got the gas tank off. Hosed out the dead thing and lots of other debris. No leaks observed. I did the acid etch and will pour in liner when it dries. My question is, how is the fuel strainer assembly supposed to be removed? It has rounded edges so I assume not by a wrench. It seems to be on pretty tight, so I figure maybe it doesn't just twist out.

The srainer is threaded in to the tank. It might have fused to the tank over time because it is made auluminum that reacts with steel. You just have to use your hands may be a vice grip and hope it dosen't break off. Unless it leaks or is damaged you should not have to remove it just flush it out good. Good luck.

Well, that's good to know. Right hand thread I hope(?) I am going to line the tank, and think the job will be done best with the strainer removed and a plug in that hole. I can just put the strainer in a vise and twist the tank. That should give plenty of leverage.

It is pipe thread. 3/8" I believe. So yes, right hand thread.

Thanks guys. I just came up from taking it off. Yup, 3/8 inch thread. The plug from an old hurricane lamp fits nicely. I gave it a shot of WD-40 first, let it sit a half hour then gave it a twist and out it came like it had never been stuck. I filled it with a quart of lining fluid, sloshed it around, poured off the excess (not much) and am letting it dry overnight. I also cleaned and touched up the tank's exterior paint.

For what it is worth, I am running the Por-15 sealer in my Farmall C tank. It has been in there for 6 years now without failure. I have 5 more tractors to do this to this winter now. One quart will do several tanks. Just use the acid etch to get it clean and let it dry completely first.

I bought a few cans off an ad in Red Power a few years ago. It is called "gas tank sealer," made by "the shop." Their phone number on the can is 805-238-6997. Also get their Tank Prep (an acid etch to prepare the tank). I have used it with no problems in several 5 gallon blitz cans, hurricane lamps (rehabbed an old 1930s railroad lantern with it) and an old 60s Cadet. Follow the directions and it eems to work pretty well.
