I am wanting to move my rear wheels on my 856 and it has wedge lock wheels. What kind of socket do you use on the star type heads and what size? Also, do they come loose easy? If I get them loose, I should be able to slide them easy because I don't have fluid in the tires.

Be prepared, these can be SOB to get loose, then SOB to get tight, sometimes we had to cut them loose with the blue gas wrench, this of course ruins them, anyway they are tough to work on, when you do get them loose dont hammer on end of axle to retighten, the shock will damage the bearings, hammer on side of axle shaft only.

Larry: Those should have been tightened to 500 ft/lbs of torque, so it takes a good 12 point socket preferably 3/4 drive. Some say you can loosen them by backing the wedge lock bolt off and hitting the end of the axle with a big hammer. I suggested some time ago on this forum, that if guys hadn't been hitting the axles with big hammers, they probably wouldn't be having so much axle bearing trouble. I rather doubt if the hammer will work if wedges were torqued to 500 ft/lbs to begin with.

There was a clamp provived with each tractor, that forced both wedges to loosen. This should be clamped to one wheel or the other. IH just provided one clamp for each tractor and you had to change it from side to side.

I agree with Hugh. If you don't have this clamp, find one. You will not have very much luck without it.

Sometimes youget lucky and the outer wedge lock will bust free first. Then just pound on the end of the bolt and the inner one will break free. Good luck
