my 460 diesel continues to start after releasing the switch, or shorting across the solenoid. I had the starter rebuilt. Then I replaced the solenoid and still have the problem. I completely disconnected the s terminal and shorted across the terminals and it still continues to start. The release spring seems plenty strong. The flywheel is a little rough from the starter drive gear. I wonder if that will not let the drive release. Causing the solenoid to stay engaged.

Hi Tim. I'm having the same starter problem on my Farmall 560 LP, i.e., the starter continues to crank the engine even after I let up on the start button. I too had my starter rebuilt and, although it worked fine at first, it started this problem after I removed and replaced the head. Do you recall what your solution was? Ron

Hi Tim, Shortly after sending that last message
I hooked up a spare rebuilt starter that I kept on hand for my pickup truck. I ran a battery cable from the pos terminal of the battery to
the solenoid. I used a piece of No10 electrical
wire for the ground from the battery and to the starter. The starter pinion should not engage
with this hookup. I used a gator clip on the S terminal and just touched the terminal where the
pos cable is on the solenoid and the pinion quickly moved fully forward and I removed the wire
from the pos connection on the solenoid and the pinion retracted quickly.

When you're cranking the engine by shorting across the solenoid, does the engine keep
cranking when you stop shorting the solenoid?

If it keeps cranking after you stop the shorting, voltage is somehow getting to the
solenoid. Hook a volt meter to the S terminal and see if voltage is present afer you stop cranking. If voltage is present the solenoid is defective. Hope this helps. Good Luck, Hal

Hi Tim, Captaink may be right about the worn ring gear teeth. I would pull that starter and
hook it to battery and watch the pinion gear when you energize the solenoid to see if it is moving forward and is being retracted when you remove the voltage to the solenoid. Do not hold that voltage on the solenoid for a long period of time.
Just touch it long enough to move the pinion gear. If it is slowly being retracted I think your solenoid may be defective. Hal

You may be on the right track with the ring gear, as if it is bad enough it might hold in the starter drive which will in turn keep the solenoid engaged enough to keep the starter running.

When the starter was rebuilt was a new starter drive installed? If not, I would try a new one to see if that helps. If not, how bad is the ring gear? I have heated them up with a acetylene torch, removed them and turned them front to back and used them again. This of course requires splitting the tractor.

Hope this helps…
