My B runs rich, so it sputters and wants to die, at all throttle ranges. It runs perfect when it is at about half choke. It didn't do this before I took the carb off to paint the tractor, now it does. I see one screw on the side of the carb- is this the adjustment? Or is that an idle speed adjustment like on an M? Thanks in advance to all.

Unless you have a kero/distillate carb, the main jet is not adjustable. Any other adjusment screws are for the idle mixture and idle speed.

Other screws? All I have is one screw. Is that what I want? Can you tell I"ve never messed with carbs before? I really don"t want to mess anything up messing with the wrong things.

You should have an idle speed screw and an idle mixture screw -- location depends on what brand the carb is. Only way to hurt anything is to tighten the idle mixture too much. Sounds like your carb needs a good cleaning, plus a new kit. If it ran good before you took it off, possibly the carb to manifold gasket is bad -- comes with the kit.

As long as you pay attention, and note exactly how far you turn the screw, you're not going to mess anything up, because you can put it back to where it was. That's a good policy when making ANY carburetor adjustment.

If you have to pull the choke out to make it run good, it's running LEAN. When you took the carb off, you probably stirred up some crud, which is now restricting a jet. It MAY help to note the position of the mixture adjustment screw(s) and open it up, say two turns. If this helps, and the crud passes through, you can then return to the original setting. Otherwise, you may have to take the carb off, take it apart, and spray aerosol carburetor cleaner through all the jets and passages, followed by compressed air. If the gasket is not too bad, and you're carefull, you might not even have to buy a gasket (or kit).
