I'm about two days away from finishing the restoration on my 1954 Super H and have ran into a snag. I put all the fluids in it today, oil, antifreeze, gearlube, and hydraulic oil. Put on the fuel tank, hooked up the battery, hit the start switch, and the engine acts like it is stuck, but I'm sure that it can't be because just yesterday I had to rotate the crankshaft some so I could get the front gear lined back up with the gear on the distributer. It was free then, so what do you think could have happened???? The engine will not move in either direction except for a very little bit, and then it just clunks as if it is banging against something. Could there be a problem with the distributer not seating right?? Any suggestions will sure be appreciated!! Thanks in advance,Dewa

Hi, I would pull that distributor and then see if
the engine turns freely. I wouldn't use the starter to rotate the engine until you determine
what the problem is. Good Luck, Hal

If you put new rings and bearings in the engine, it may be a little too tight for the starter to turn. See if you can crank it by hand. If it is bound tight, then you need to do some investigating. If it just turns a little tough, get a friend to pull start you the first time (4th or 5th gear). Just for future reference, I turn the engine by hand after installing the crank bearings, then after installing each piston(new rings) and its rod bearings. It should get a little tighter as you go. That way if it gets real tight, you know where the problem is and can fix it before going any farther. It's not uncommon for the newly overhauled engine to be too tight for the starter on these old tractors. Good Luck!

On the locked up engine About 20 years ago a friend of mine had that problem with a allis c Took me a long time to find it. He had put too long a bolt on the side of the flywheel housing,to mount something. The bolt contacted the flywheel locking it up. Check for a bolt making contact someware.

I had a locked new rebuild once. Hey ,remember that socket you could'nt find,I pulled the head and there it was on top of a piston. If it turned all the way over before,I'd suggest taking the starter off and looking there first.

Whoah! before you do anything. You say you did something with the distibuter drive? Maybe the gear is not meshing right? Maybe you should undo whatever you did last and see if the motor turns over then.

Guess, starter is stuck in the flywheel. Pull the starter and see if the engine is free. If the distributor is sitting done tight, fully seated on the base - that's not the problem.

If the engine is free when you pull the starter, fully charge the battery - like over night, then try it again. A weak battery will have just enough juice to turn the starter and drive the over running clutch and gear into the flywheel sometimes locking them together. You could also try a known good battery.

If it's not the starter, disassemble the engine in reverse order of assembly until you find the problem.

Hello,
If it locked after you put fluid in pull the spark plugs and see if it is still stuck. Head gasket might have put antifreeze in a cylinder and liquid locked. Mark
