My 460 continues to start after I release the switch. I had the starter rebuilt, still same problem. New solenoid still same problem. Any suggestions? Tim

Remove the starter from the tractor and bench test it to see if it woks correctly. The solenoid is mounted on the starter I assume. Many types of starters out there but basically the solenoid kicks the starter gear out to engage the ring gear. Electrical contacts are made at the end of the solenoid stroke to start the starting motor.
Releasing the starter button the solenoid is spring return pulling the gear out of mesh with the ring gear. Electrical contacts break very soon after the drive gear begins to retract. If it work on the bench it's probabl;y binding on the tractor. Make sure it is not cocked on the mounting flange. If there is heavy burr on the
ring gear teeth this can cause a bind.

i did short across the starter, release the screw driver and it still starts. not a push button problem. i"ve got a good battery. the flywheel is chewed up a little from the drive gear on the starter. i wonder if this is making the drive gear to hang in, and the spring is not stong enough to pull it out as long as it is starting.

You have a bad switch that is staying in contact inside or shorted wiring. Check the small terminal on the solenoid that has the S wire on it and see if it has constant power to it. If it does, it's the switch or wiring problem.

Hi Tim, Try shorting across the starter solenoid
and see if the starter hangs up. Hal

Hi Tim, I usually don't reply to these for fear of being wrong, but I had this problem with my 350. The starter ended up being the final culprit, but having enough charge in the battery (I used two) helped tremendously. Might just check the battery charge. There's also the slim possibility the starter isn't quite right although it has been rebuilt.
Good luck!
Diana

I'd get a new button.
