I’m working on a Cub that the hydraulics stopped working. They worked a week ago, now nothing. I don’t know much about Cub’s, I own a Ford 2N. I cannot get the rear hitch to go down at all, even standing on it and moving the lever. Are the hydraulics powered both ways? On my Ford it will go down with the engine off by moving the lever (or leaving it set for an hour, but that is another rebuild issue). I did take out the big bolt at the top of the cylinder and stuck my finger in and couldn’t feel any fluid. But since it will not go down, this tells me something is jammed up in the cylinder. This may be a wrong assumption as my experience is on different systems.

Jerry, in addition to the other comments you've been given, check the motor oil. If it's high and the hydraulics are low the seal on the pump is probably leaking into the engine. The early touch controls used non detergent oil, but later ones used HYTRAN,don't know if the universal is compatible, but I've seen comments not to use it in cubs. Can you hear the pump running? There have been occasions of the keeper coming off the shaft of the pump allowing the nut to unscrew and the gear to come off. As has been stated, a cub does power in both directions, and will not go down without pressure. You can find cub manuals to view on line at the link beolow

I would top off the hydraulic fluid first-it does power down as well as up. No fluid-no power!! May also be other things, but check fluid first.

It was the fluid. Put a bunch in and now it works great.

How in the world do you get fluid in that hole? Also is the universial Hyd-trans fluid ok?

I use a measuring cup and funnel with a flexible tube.

Hi Jerry, Cub hydraulics are power down as well as up. There are also a bunch of little check valves, etc in the unit, could be as problem with one of those. Check the service manuals on the site below, and the trouble shooting guide. They should help you out. Good luck.
