Can anyone tell me where to buy a new pitman arm for an A-22 sickle bar mower? If not, any idea what wood was used to make them?

Thanks for the help.

If you decide to make your own pitman stick, be VERY careful to get the exact length. The knife sections need to center exactly in the guards at each end of the stroke. If they don't center, it will cut poorly and run a lot harder.

Try several of the farm supply stores in your area. One of them will have a supply of pitman (sticks) of various lengths. Take the old one along to compare the length. Frequently you will need to purchase a longer pitman, cut to length and drill the holes to match the clamps.

If you want to try making one yourself, use hickery, ash, or a tight straight grained oak. No knots.

We've used birch or maple by times.

Under what category? Just looked at the entire list and couldn't find them.

Sorry they've changed things. Take a look at their paper version. I have the 2002 one here at home. 4 different IHC ones are listed but no a-22. There is a universal that you cut and drill for 8.99 made out of kiln dried ash.

Doug: My grand father used to make them out of oak. I don't think the machinery companies ever used that quality. He made them for just about any make, kind of a hobby in his senior years.
