Farmall H Antifreeze

I have a Farmall H that set for 3 or 4 months,when I tried to start it it is locked up (the stack was covered) I checked the oil level and the crankcase was full of antifreeze. Could this be the cause of the lockup? ( there wasnt any in the cylinders) I have heard antifreeze is hard on bearings ( babit ) but it wasnt run with antifreeze in the crankcase.# 1 what caused the antifreeze th get into the crankcase? # 2 what caused the lockup ? thanks in advance

There is one frost plug at the front of the block and two at the rear. If they corrode through, coolant can seep down between the mounting plate and the block into the oilpan. I have this problem with my W4 at the moment.

We just got our w-6 unstuck, it had a cracked head, that could be the same probablem as your H.

I would say it was the head also. I have seen H's with freeze plugs, but not many.

#1 There are many possibilities but my guess since you say there was no antifreeze in the cylinders is that there is a crack somewhere on the bottom of the block or behind one of the sleeves themselves. Pull the pan and look for antifreeze hanging on the inside of the block. If you don�t find anything, then take the head off and have it checked by a reputable machine shop. The leak is definately inside your engine somewhere.

#2 The lockup was very likely caused by the antifreeze. Antifreeze is sticky, and will seep into bearings and other metal mating surfaces. I would suggest you disassemble the engine, have it cooked out at a machine shop to eliminate any possibility of antifreeze in oil galleys, determine where the leak was, and then reassemble with new bearings on the crankshaft and camshaft. Since you will have it apart, I would consider a valve grind and new rings at least if not a major overhaul.

Hi Bill,

Boy, on a H, I'd be lookin' for a cracked head or block and more than likely it is in the head. Long shot on a faulty head gasket.

Put a pressure tester on that radiator and I'll bet it won't hold.

I don't remember if there are frost plugs in the back of the H like the 113 and 123 motors. If so, one of the frost plugs could have blown and antifreeze got into the oilpan

How Could that be? The frost plugs on on the outside of the block/head. Right?

Not following you, unless I've forgoten how that H's block is configured.
