I know the spring in the governor should have no tension when the speed control lever is forward in the idle position. Should it start to have some tension as soon as the lever is moved back a couple of notches? I would think so, but mine has to be moved back about a third of the way to tighten the spring. So I think the governor is not starting to function at low speeds. Thank you for your thoughts and experience!

I don"t answer many posts because of my ignorance, but I do enjoy reading posts every day.

I like to adjust mine for the least amount of slack possible. When I pull back on the throttle handle, I want things to happen immediately.

Thanks, RF. Did you make your adjustment with the set screws or by bending the spring to shorten it?

It is possible to bend the spring but it needs to be done with the spring in place which gets a little tricky, but it can be done. Another thing to look for are the holes that the spring hooks into. These holes get worn and some what egged out. The best way I have found to remedy this is to braze or weld the holes shut and then redrill them, you can even drill the new hole a little further back from the original, this will help to get the tension on the spring where you want it. You will want to disassemble the gov. before doing any welding.

You can adjust the linkage from the throttle lever to the governor. At the end of the rod from the throttle control lever there is a spring assembly that the rod from the governor is ran by. You can adjust the tension on these springs or actually move the position of the rod. It is all located ontop of the head. Kind of hard to explain, take the hood off and you will understand.

This adjustment will have no effect on what is going on inside the governor.
