I just bought a new "stanley" muffler for my 1941 H. It seems louder now then it did with the rusted out muffler. My ears hurt, what should I do to quiet this thing down?

You can get an OEM replicate from Mark's Tractors with the original sound and small outlet for $88 including shipping. I have 2 of them.

I've seen, in automotive applications, mufflers packed with steel wool to lower the noise level. It does make a difference; make sure to use a coarse grade and don't pack too tight.

Pat, this is old fashioned but I have heard of guys getting a great big washer and tacking it on the end of the muffler, one that fits inside that still has a large enough diameter hole will quiet it down and still give you flow....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Mike,

Pat does have a point; there just is no comparison to those old "stock" mufflers with the smaller diameter outlet. They just had their own distinctive "ring" to "em.

I"ve never heard of the washer thing; might work.
