I bought a 1940 M today and when I drove it home today the 4 hood latches poped loose and I was wondering if there was a way to fix it. Do I need to replace the springs or buy a new hood with new mounts or what? Also what was the corect pulley for a M? The fiber or the iron pulley? I have a iron pulley that came off of one of my grandpa's Farmalls (either the M or the SMTA) and thats what i want to put on it.

The steel pully is nice if you must leave your tractor outside at all. The paper ones can suck up water, rot and expand. If you use it all the time the belt dressing keeps the water out. The paper is better if you are going to do serious belt work, it slips less.

Ross, I have seen this with hoods before. When people take off the hood it doesn't come off easy unless you spread it apart. My dad used to get mad at the hood and bend it out so it came off easier. Then the latches can't hold it because there is so much pressure pushing out on the hood. I have corrected this by taking off the hood, setting it on the ground, and making sure the sides are vertical and not bowed out at the bottom. If they are, bend each side so the sides are vertical. If your hood latches are popping out then there is somehting either bent or out of alignment.

I don't know that there was a "correct" pulley for any tractor. The pulley used was determined by the work to be done, or what the machine being driven required. Since you already have the iron pulley, use it.

I suspect that your trouble with the hood latches can be quickly resolved with new springs & hooks. If you want to try something first, try lubricating the springs a lot for a few days, if that doesn"t work then Ebay has these cheap. I think that the M"s came with either type of pulley, my "51 H has a paper pulley, and if you have your grandpa"s there to put on, i"m sure that"d be just fine! ---Jeff

I had the iron pulley for mine.I would use what you have. Also had to tinker with hood latches to get them to work right.
