this works for me----- remove #2-3-and 4 spark plugs. When compression is felt remove #1 plug. Continue up with crank until pin in front of crankshaft is horizontal, this places DC on flywheel in view. Deactivate inpulse coupling (this is not an absolute must but will make it easier to time). Mag points should have been set at .013. One point to remember is the impulse coupling "does not retard timing" on the E4A or F4 Mag. This is done externaly with manual lever. The mag should be timed in retarded position. Always work the tractor in full advanced position just as the mags with automatic inpulse -- H4 ect. Otherwise tends to overheat. . For safety use the proper starting procedures-----!

Take # 1 plug out put your thumb on the hole and rol motor over slowly untill you have compression roll motor over to top dead enter then take cap off your mag and set that so it is ready to spark on #1 piston it will probably be a little past it tho put everything back to gether and try it. Are you trying to crank start it or are you pulling it around with another tractor we had to reset our mag 4 differt times befor mine took off and after you get it running dont take it off to mess with it Hope the info works Eric

like eric said, get it at top dead center on # 1 cylinder, take the breaker point cover off and look in, the points should be just starting to open. In a magneto ignition (in any ignition) the spark occurs as the points open.
