I just bought a Super M this past weekend. At least the back is a Super M. The drive shaft houseing has been changed becasuse the s# is for 39 M. Was woundering what are the casting numbers for a Super M engine? To make sure that this is truely a Super M motor not an M with a Super M rearend. Or any other trates to make sure this a Super M. Thanks, Dig

The brakes and the 264 engine are the only real telltale signs that it's a Stage I Super M. The Stage II has live hydraulics and a battery under the seat.

My money is that you got suckered, and ended up with a '39 M with Lambert brakes. :( Still, depending on what you paid, it not a bad thing.

If you are under the illusion that you have a SM transaxel because of the disc brakes, you need to understand that those brakes were available from Lambert and could be retrofitted back to '39 in either H or M. The Lamberts only have three bolts vs five for SM and SH.

Dig - A Super M engine will have the characters "C-264" cast prominently on upper right side of the block near the oil filter can. Or find the casting date code on the block. For a Super M the last character should be an X or Y (indicating 1952 or 1953)
