Who knew it could be fun...

As a kid I wasn't always the biggest fan of hay season, but who knew views could change!

The folks that mower our fields since we stopped left a bunch of hay on the ground due to the wet, soft ground (it's been raining in Maine every other day, no kidding). Well where the big equipment ruts, my BN just rolls across with out making a mark, and it would be a shame to let that hay go to waste, so I broke out the tedder and the rake.

I have to say it was quite fun, as crazy as that sounds.

I don't have the bailer anymore, so the tractor work ended after the tedding and raking, but that was good enough.

The rake looks so big behind the BN, kind of a of bear in tight spaces but that's just a learning curve.

Now I just need a sickle bar mower so I can put up the small field!

Thanks for posting that picture. One of my favorite jobs was to rake hay with my grandfather's B. I'm fortunate to still have it and everytime I drive it I can still smell the hay.

That"s an interesting rake, never saw one in the flesh. Does it have a model number on it?

It's a Mccormick rake/tedder. It's the three bar style that could be bought setup to be used behind horses or a tractor. As far as I know it's always been pulled behind a tractor. I do have the manual, but it doesn't list any model number, just the name above...

It works really well as a rake. It's a bit slow, but thats just fine since you want to take it easy when pulling it (no such thing as replacement parts, we do have a parts machine which has come in handy). The tedder leaves a lot to be desired, that's why my grandfather bought the Kuhn.

Yep, I have thought that raking was one of the more pleasant farm jobs. Smells good for one thing.

I know exactly what you mean as I often hook up to an old impliment and work away at something in our front field. We haven"t worked our farm for almost 15 years (we rent it to a farmer up the concession), but every once & a while i like to get out there and make the old farmall grunt a bit!! ---Jeff
