What's the difference between a Magneto and a coil? How do I tell which my farmall A has?

Remember the reply to one of your questions was CUB MANUALS. Go back and click on the CUB MANUALS. Add that site to your favorites list.

Search through the listings until you find ignition distributor and ignition magneto. You will find pictures of each ignition system and service information. The basic ignition system, battery or magneto, tune up settings for the Cub and A are the same.

Coil is a slim 5 or so inch cylander, which is usually over a roundish looking distributer. A mag is a larger unit (usually metal looking) and is all one unit unlike coil & distributer which are 2 units. ---Jeff

Most Farmall As had a magneto. The magneto generates its own electricity and does not require a battery or any other electrical stuff for the tractor to run. The coil (or more properly battery ignition) must have battery and generator set up as a source of electric energy to operate. The magneto does have a coil. It is covered by the black square plastic cap on top of the magneto. wire goes from that to center of distributor. The battery ignition will have a round cylinderical shaped coil mounted on top of the distributor.

Actually, mine is battery ignition, but the thing is, it only has two wires to and from the battery. One that goes to the starter, and the other to the frame. It doesn't have a generator. I'm pretty sure after reading these, it has a magneto.

Thanx guys!
