I got a chance to do a compresion test on my 460 today.
If you have been following my exploits with this 460. You know it runs like crap.
So far I have.
Cleaned the advance wheights in the dist.
Put new points and condencer.
New cap and rotor.
New plugs.
Timed it.
Rebuilt the carb. As best as I can.
Exhaust flapper thing seems to work. Heat riser I think its called.
That left me wondering if I had a burnt valve in the head.
Comp test revealed.
Cylinder #1 at 103 pounds
#2 at 103 pounds
#3 at 105 pounds
#4 at 104 pounds
#5 at 103 pounds
#6 at 103 pounds
Not sure if my tester is really all that accurate as far as highest reading its a cheapie.
But it does show that all the cylinders are about the same condition.
Wondering where to go now? By all rights this thing should be running like a top.
I am leaning to the carb again.
What say you?

Kelly, I see points, cond, cap, and rotor, but what about the wires? I don"t know if you just missed them on your list or haven"t changed them but the can really make a big difference, and not look like anything is wrong with them. Just a thought. Brian

What did the old plugs look like? Any fouling or crud?

What kind of plugs are you using? My 460 run real good after a valve job, then within a month started running rough. I went for a hotter plug. That made the difference.

They are champion plugs. The IH dealer asked what I was using it for and I said haying. So he gave me those.
Old plugs looked ok as far as I could tell. No fouling.

If you run champions make sure they are d15y. D21 that the book recomends are to hot for modern day ethonal gas. My 504 and 706 with d21 would run good under load for a few minutes then would start sputtering and almost shut down, switched to d15y and no more trouble.

I am not sure. There are alot of small holes in this carb. I am betting some thing is still plugged up.
When you pull the throttle real fast it acts like its starved for gas, Just sucks air.
Wish I had a spare carb to try out. That would tell me.
If you move the throttle slow you can get it to full rpm with out it dieing. But does not stay that way. Any load on it that makes the govoner move and it stumbles and looses rpms.
It idles perfect and runs real well at full rpm until you load it.

It sounds like it is not getting enough fuel when it is under load. The main jet and the emusion tube feed fuel into the venturi once it is off idle.

All I have is an H, so I don't have any manuals for the 460. If the carburators were similar, the emulsion tube (or metering nozzle) comes up at an angle into the venturi. The main jet feeds the lower end which has holes or slots that pre-mix fuel and air and discharges it into the carb throat. If the slots / holes are plugged up, the motor will not run right.

How different is the carb for your 400 ? Can you make an adapter to attach it to the manifold ? Can you turn it 45 degrees and attach it with a couple vice grips (almost kidding)? If you could fit any other carb, you could operate the throttle plate by hand and see what happens. Do be careful not to set the shed on fire.

Try and replace the manifold gaskets. You might have a leak on the intake side.

I have a 560 gas(very similar) and I went through the carb 3 times before I got it right.I would consider myself a very competent carb mechanic and I missed it twice.Somewhere in there is some crud. I finally baked the carb in the oven at 300 degrees for an hour or so then blasted it out with air.(after it cooled) Oven cleaner works good also, but don't leave it on the venturi for too long,it's aluminum and it will eventually eat it,literally. Oh yea,the wife was'nt home at the time. But she did make a comment about the house stinking.

I always disassemble as completely as possible removing all jets and plugs and plastic parts if any and do an overnite soak of all metal parts in Berryman's Chem dip Carb cleaner (an aggressive chemical cleaner, a 1 gallon soaker can is available at auto stores) to dissolve all the old gas varnish and goo that can be in the internal passages. Then soak in hot water and industrial detergent and rinse and then blow everything out good with compressed air, repeat if needed and then assemble.

Rebuilt carb, best you can? What does that mean?

Ignition wires? fire the tractor at night to see if they light up the night.

Hello,
On small gas engines I use a torch cleaner in the holes of the carb to make sure they"re clean. Worked well on a A .. Mark
