IH 384 - oil leak after changing engine oil....

I changed the engine oil on my IH 384 tractor yesterday. After putting everything back together and cranking the motor, I discovered that it was leaking around the bottom of the oil filter canister. It is actually leaking around where the bolt screws up through the bottom of the oil filter canister. I have tightened the bolt up as tight as I can get it without possibly stripping the threads, but it is still leaking. The previous filter wasn't leaking at all and I carefully put everything back together exactly like it was before as far as i know. When I put it back together, I placed the small rubber gasket around the bolt and slid it down to the bottom of the oil filter canister. Next, I placed the spring down over the bolt and then placed the metal disc the holds the oil filter in place down over the bolt. Next comes the oil filter and then the metal disc that holds the top part of the oil filter in place. After putting all of this together, it is then screwed onto the oil filter housing on the side of the motor. After tightening the oil filter canister into the the oil filter housing and cranking the motor, there is a steady stream of oil coming out of the bottom of the oil filter canister. I took it all back off and tried to make sure that bottom rubber gasket was pressed onto the bottom of the oil filter canister and as far as I can tell, it was. I then put everything back together and discovered that it was still leaking. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong or what I may have assembled backwards. Also, do you know if there is some type of a conversion made that will allow you to use a regular screw on oil filter like the ones that fit onto diesel cars or trucks. Thanks for any help in this matter.

Hi, did you replace the big "O" ring type gasket that goes between the top of filter canister and the oil filter holder. If my memory is correct, IH would include about 3 of these "O" ring gasket and it was up to you to choose the correct one.

Also sometimes a piece of the old "O" ring would remain stuck in the groove and would require liing on your back under the filter holder assembly with a sharp pionted tool to dig it out.

Be careful about over tighening the bolt in the filter cannister as you can warp the filter holder. My brother has done this is the past.

Good luck
JB

Brad just look at it again I'm not sure but you may of misplaced a washer or Oring that seals bolt. Lost a few when changing oil on a 706 dealer has them and they are cheaper than a spinon kit. Never had a problem with these filters if you replace every thing you took off to change filter.

There is not a leak coming from around the top of the oil canister, it is only coming from around the bolt that goes through the bottom of the oil filter canister to hold the oil filter canister onto the oil filter housing. Apparently I just need to replace the little rubber gasket that fits around the bolt on the bottom.

Hi, we haven't had a 384 since 1993 but I seem to remember that the bolt had a concave washer on the bottom tht fit against the filter canister and the "O" ring on the bolt was on the inside of the filter canister held down by a spring and washer.

Is this the way yours is assembled or is my memory fading ?
