I have a 52 H that has positve ground. It seems that when it is running the needle for the discharge or charge stays in the discarged area a little. After starting a few times it seems I have to charge the battery back up. I have two questions. What can I check or do to make it charge? Also how do I charge the battery while it is in the tractor and hooked up. Do I put the red cable on the pos or the neg?

I like your tractors and that is a nice looking 4020.

Search the site for BobM's wiring and trouble shooting charts. These are pretty simple systems to diagnose.

When charging a battery, ALWAYS connect the positive terminal of the charger to the positive terminal of the battery...no matter if your tractor is positive ground or negative ground.

Personally, I'd remove the generator--not THAT much work on an H, two mounting bolts and an adjuster bolt, plus two wires (disconnect battery cable first, before beginning removal)-- and have it checked to make sure it's charging correctly, both in volts and amps...AutoZone should be able to do that. If your generator's OK, then the problem becomes either the voltage regulator, the wiring, or the ammeter, with the ammeter being the LOWEST on the scale of probability.
