Part number markings on steel parts

I have seen faint remnants of part numbers which look to be placed with a rubber stamp on steel parts which don't have a part number cast or stamped into it. Was this common to ALL steel parts? I was thinking of getting a generic 6 or 8 digit alpha-numeric ink-stamper and marking all the non-cast parts on my restored F-20. Would this be correct and factory-ish?

P.S. I have some cultivator parts with white P/N stampings over the original blue paint, and have an NOS fuel tank with yellow P/N stamp over the red primer.

I did that an a set of after market brake pedals that are on my F-20 they were marked "pat pending" It seems items that were added later like wheels for rubber tires had number marked on the. and replacement parts like the tank you mention. Otherwise the tractor would have had no painted numbers from the factory.
