Does the Positive or negative terminal of the battery connect to the frame of a Farmall A?

All Farmall tractors, at least until the late 50's were positive ground from the factory.

CNKS,

Yep, a good rule of thumb is: '54 and older is more than likely 6 volt, positive ground.

'55 and newer, 12 volt and neg ground.

Applies to cars, trucks, boats and oversized wrist watches as well. :>)

Have a good one,

Allan

Except for diesels, reading between the lines in Guy's Hundred series book indicates that the switch to 12 volt began during (not necessarily at the start of) production of the 50 series tractors. It didn't happen all at once. Far as I can tell, with the exception of diesels, all 00 series were 6 volt. I believe the older GM and Ford?? cars were 6 volt NEGATIVE ground. Battery powered wrist watches hadn't been invented yet, or else cost $$$$.

Matt: It could be either, depending on how the tractor is set up. The original 6-volt system was positive ground, meaning that the positive terminal should be connected to the frame. However, many A's are switched over to negative ground (and frequently 12-volt as well) in which case the negative terminal should be attached to the frame. If you have the original 6-volt battery setup, the odds are good that the positive terminal should be attached to the frame.
