Hi Abe, I read your note that the timing was ok.
Will the tractor start? Your rings may be stuck
in the piston grooves do to varnish buildup. The rings could have lost their tension too. I would keep squirting oil into the cylinders and spinning the engine for a while. If the compression remains low, I think you'll have to do an engine rebuild. If the sleeves aren't worn
beyond their wear limits you may be able to use your old pistons with new rings, bearings and a valve job. I like the Moly rings best. Everyone has their own opinions on this. Good Luck, Hal

When you check compression, be sure that the throttle is wide open and the plugs are all removed. Tuck the coil to cap wire under a cap clamp and be sure the battery is fully charged. If someone has changed the Schrader valve core on the business end of the tester and put in a standard tire valve core, you will get very low readings. Get the correct (compression tester core) one from an auto supply store.
Test all cylinders dry and then squirt 3-4 pumps of oil in each cylinder, spin the engine several times and retest again. If the pressure rises quite a bit in each cylinder, then you have a cause for ring replacement.
Locate a good cylinder leak-down tester and use it to do a much better job of determining where your engine is loosing compression.

Thank`s for your info Hal.The timing is right on the money. It hasn`t been running for A few years.I`ll take your advice & put some engine oil in the cylinders & check again,Abe.

If it runs at all ,I would say your compression gauge is bad.

Hi Abe, Is the compression on all cylinders within a few pounds of each other? Has the tractor been running ok and all of a sudden the
compression is very low?

Remove No.1 plug and have someone rotate engine until you feel compression against
your thumb. When you feel compression, stop the
rotation and look for the timimg marks. You should be close to your pointer. Slowly rotate engine until the timing marks are aligned.

Remove distributor cap and see if rotor
points to No1 position on the distributor. If it
doesn't, the valve timing may slipped for some reason. In this position both valves on No1 cylinder should be closed, you could check your
valve clearance with a feeler gauge.

If the timing appears ok, squirt some
engine oil into each cylinder and then recheck the
compression. If the compression is alot higher,
you probably need to overhaul the engine. Good Luck, Hal
