We are in the process of painting our 1947 "M". What items should be painted black? Thanks for your help!

If you have the replacement (tall) gas cap from IH, they came black and most farmers, I've been told, never painted them. Have seen many that were still black.

The distributor cap, plug wires, gear shift knob, steering wheel rim, Farmall grill emblem, and the tires should all be black. The early Ms had a black muffler, after that they were all aluminum, or silver colored, but then these items are not painted in the first place. Everything else, with the exception of the wheel rims, should be red. It is your tractor, if you want to create a little contrast, you can paint any part of it black that suits your fancy.

Actually, if you want to really get technical about it, the gearshift knob should be painted red, too, but I don't like the way that looks anyway. Doesn't really matter, I guess, the only people who would be critical are the correct police.

Just my 2 cents worth,
Nathan

What about the starter and the radiator? Were they painted black?

The starter and radiator would have been painted red along with the rest of the tractor.

I think actually the radiator was black. I guess I should check Guy Fay's book sometime- which I recommend to all. I always paint the radiator black and mask off all the hoses. I've found anything besides red to look at makes a Farmall look good. Good luck, and post some pics when you're done.
