There appear to be to different types of cabs put on '66 series tractors (766, 1066). The most obvious difference is one type has bent doors (often painted white) unlike the other which are straight (painted red). Why the different cabs???

Also what are the 'black strip' models and why?

Thanks

There are three types of factory cabs that could be had on the 66 series. First came the white diamond-shaped Custom cab, like the late 26/56 series had. Next came the white IH Deluxe cab, which had straight doors with windows in the bottom of them. In about '73 or '74, the Deluxe cab was updated and became commonly known as the "Red Cab". This cab is red with a white roof. The windows were removed from the bottom of the doors, and I think the rear lower window got bigger.

KB: The cab you are calling a Custom cab was not an IH cab. It was made by a company called Excell. Those cabs did appear on other makes of tractors as well. The only cabs IH ever made for 66 series were the White and Red with White roof ROPS cabs.

I had an Excell cab on my 656, it had been removed from a 766 as the customer wanted ROPS. I had a neighbor with an Excell cab on an Allis 190XT. I've seen them on Cockshutts and Olivers of the mid to late 60s.

scotc: No the year around is another different cab, it just has a slight bend in door about 1/2 wat up. The Excell has quite a sinificant bend.

66 had options then of no cab, custom or diamond shape, left over from the 56 series, deluxe that was most common in midwest, had the 2 fans on the back with AC. Also you could get after market such as Hiniker or Year-A-Round.

The "delux" cab as you call it was HUGE square box. We found out how big when we hooked our 1466 to our grinder mixer - on the first left turn the unloading aurger broke through the back window. Never had that happen with any other cab tractor we owned.

I have never seen the "56" series cab on a "66" series but then as you said that wasn't to common in the midwest (Kansas).

Ken: The white cabs with door bent (for want of better words) was built by Excell and was used on 56 series to some extent as well. There were also a number of other after market cabs used. The straight post cab is a ROPS cab and was far more costly when new, and was the only IH cab.

The black stripe has nothing to do with cab, but rather some up grades seen later on 86 series tractors. I do forget exactly what those were. Someone on here will know.
