Does anyone know where I can get a starter rod for my Farmall A? Is it supposed to be a pull rod or a push rod?

Thanx!

Have a 1945 A, has a push rod from the steering support to the starter, >18 inches, not a foot model. Could have been changed over time, don't know, it starts fine.

This thread brings up another question for me. From this board I have learned that some of the Farmall A's had push rod starting. I have owned many A's and Super A's, but have never owned or even seen one that you had to push to start, just pull type. Could this be some kind of regional thing where most of one kind was shipped to one region and the other to another region?

Yes, the puch rod for the A and B are the same. I do have a 1946 A that has a selinoid with a push button in the light switch box. This A also has a fiber pulley which is unusual.

It's a push rod. If you are in Ontario I can give you the number of a great Used Tractor Parts place near Goderich. I think though , you could make one without much trouble, i can give you the specs if you like ---Jeff

Is it identical to the rod for the B?

Not really sure, because i don't have a B, but likely is as the engine is similar. The end on my dad's comes straight out from the starter and then does a 90 degree turn for about 2 inches. I use my foot to push it to start the tractor. ---Jeff

That is the way all of them were when new and had a mechanical sw mounted on the starter. Over the years starters were changed with replacement starters that were for the C and the C had the post on the brush end and required the same switch but had a pull lever instead of the push one used with your foot on the As and Bs. I have some of you need one. Some starters even had a threaded post done by rebuilders and then required a different type of sw. But the original starters had the button on the end where the BENDIX is and used a push-rod around 9in long and was pushed with your foot.

Thanks Gene. I may be interpreting your post wrong. You said "But the original starters had the button on the end where the BENDIX is and used a push-rod around 9in long and was pushed with your foot." The IT manual shows the A's and C's both having the pull type rod with no mention of push type. My Super A has been under my control since new in 1950 and it is pull rod also. It is a mystery to me why some would have the push type rod unless they were changed sometime over the years.

All As had a push rod when new, super As and Cs had a pull.
