184 Cub idle too fast.

I got the governor problem fixed. Now I can't get the low idle set down to the six hundred rpms the book calls for. I'm just using an old sun tach and not a service tach but according to the sun it's idling about 1200-1400 rpms. If I adjust the low idle screw in it starts to run rough and sounds like it's going to stall. Is it time for a carb kit or am I missing something in the adjustment? Thanks.

Are you sure the tachometer you are using will work on a 4 cylinder engine? Sometimes they have a switch or setting for the number of cylinders. I know the old Sun dashboard tachs had a switch inside for the number of cylinders... 4 - 6 - 8. 12-1400 rpms on that engine almost full throttle. Just a thought. Bruce

Yes the tach was set at 4 cylinders. If it had been set for six or eight it would read closer to what it should.

Turn the slow idle adjustment all the way in til it just seats and then back it out 1 turn. If it has a high speed adjustment I'd set that similar. Start the tractor and warm it up. Idle it down at the throttle stop as parts man said then adjust the low idle screw in til it stumbles some then out til it stumbles. Then find the sweet spot between where it idles best. Open up the throttle so it is running full governed speed (probably around 1800) and adjust the high speed needle out til it's noticeably rich then in til any black smoke just clears up. I always try to set these tractors on the rich side, they seem to make best power there. Run it around to see how it performs under load. Tweak the high speed adjustment this way or that for best power.
If you find it not responding to adjustment you should rebuild the carb. I always tear them down and soak all the metal parts in carb chem-clean overnite and blow out all the little passages with compressed air. If you don't have a high speed needle, not to worry, it's a fixed jet carb and no adjustment needed.

The book says this should low idle at 600 and fast idle around 2300 as it's a 184 lowboy-a1977 model. The fast idle was reading pretty close where it should be but the low end is reading 12-1400.

You need to adjust the idle speed screw. Its on the throttle shaft by the carb on the linkage side. (next to the block).
