Baling Barley and weeds on an open tractor! Breathed enough dust yesterday that my head is still stuffed up. I did finally quit about 6 last nigh cuz my eyes were getting mattered shut til I couldn't see. Finished up just noon today and brought the baler home in the wind. now I've got alalfa to bale in the morning. I don't think i want to bale after dark. seems like maybe I need to wear goggles and a dust mask. What do you guys do? I realy can't justify a cab tractor for my little rinky-dink operation.

Cowman: I wouldn't get too excited about getting a cab for haying. I had two tractors with cabs and the only one we ever used haying was 656 on the haybine. When it came to the other jobs like raking and baling we liked the open tractors. I might add, a lot of this was employee driven.

One thing about the open tractor the dust can blow away. You get a cab full of dust, not very pleasant either. The cabs built up until the 1980's would not keep hay and weed dust out. I've been in a couple of new ones lately, and I suspect that has not improved.

You have my sympathy. I do a little sneezing when I cut the hay if it is grass and tassling.
Really not a big problem though. I use a row crop tractor and I keep moving so the dust is behind me. By the time I come back down it has cleared away. Baling is REALLY dusty but I only know that because I saw a videotape the family made of me running the baler. From a distance it looked like the baler was smoking but I couldn't tell from where I was sitting.

I`ll add my 2 cents worth. From my experience baling theres as much dust goes in through your eyeballs as goes in through your nose so you`d definately need good goggles as well as a dust mask. Best bet is to try to bale heading up wind. You have my sympathy.

hay cowman I have a cab I took off my 806 that would fit a lot of smaller IHC tractors. I took it off because I have 2 larger ones with cabs. I would make you a really good deal on it. It has a pretty good fan and bycools are available for aprox $400 to 500 new but there are used ones out there.

I was doing a little mowing on the weekend, no wind to speak of. It was like getting a puff of pepper up the nose. I sneezed so hard and so much I think I got whiplash. Whiplash, hmmmm.

Well, I can't sue me, would be like getting blood from a turnip, your own turnip...

I have used the white dust masks, best ones are the ones the dry wall guys use when they are sanding. That stuff is dangerous! The mask will only last about an hour or two, but it beats a head full of seeds, dust and whatever else is getting airborne. I keep a few on the tractor in a plastic bag.

You could always wear your cowboy hat and bandana and the city folks driving by would think you were robbing the hay field...it messes with their heads, heh heh.

Just not a whole lot you that I have found that works when square baling. Raking the hay so that the wind blows across you if you have a constant wind direction? That one never really worked out. Wind just changed directions.

When you figure it out, let me know. Weed dust causes me to cough for about an hour after I stop baling.

Just think,all these old peices,all those farms,how did they do it? I use one of those white disposable type dust mask even when I just cut the grass.Eyes are a big problem for me,but usually when Im in the feild I have my shades on anywyas.

Cowman,I'm looking for 8 good pushrods for a 1926 McCormick 10-20,also the long stud that goes through the valve cover.
