Our Farmall A has a 12-volt starter. It frequently fouls plugs and always runs rough. When we use it for pulling, it coughs and sputters really bad. As I don't get to use this tractor 'cause I "might mess it up", I'd sure love it if some of you all out there will help me figure out the problem so I can give my other half the right suggestion. Oh, and don't get the wrong idea, I get to clean up the tractor, make it shine and hand over the tools, so I have some interaction involved! But I'd still love to hand over the answer to correct the problem!

First thing to do is run a compression check. You can spend lots of money and time but if your engine is in bad shape all the tune-up stuff will not make a shot engine better. If it has 12v someone has already tried to fix something that was not good to start with. In the process going to 12v maybe didnot follow up with complete correct parts this happens all to often.

Are the plugs very black when you remove them? If so, the carburator is set way too rich. This would explain the coughing and sputtering also. Make sure the Points and spark plug gaps are correct also. What plugs so you have in it?

Check point gap and clean points and make sure you have the right condenser for a 12 volt coil.

Farmallgirl: By the symptoms you describe, i think that you need to : #1 - Rebuild the carb (new kit & settings) and #2 - Check the coil, wires, points and condenser. I'm pretty sure though that this is a fuel problem. ---Jeff
