i recently picked up a # 7 mower--it has a 64" cutting blade--i figured it should take a 31" pitman stick & i need to raise the neck about 4 " to a better height on the back of my allis chalmers WD45 for a better angle---i believe the mowing blade & assembly are off a john deer mower--it will mow excellent for a while but tends to snap home made ash pitman sticks---if any one has any suggestions (money being a big issue)i will be grateful---we will mow with this--not look at it--it has 15" rubber tires on it--please help---thankx---fred

You can get a operators manual for a few bucks at Binder Books. Also you should be able to pick up a new pitman at the parts store for around $10-11 since they still make them.

Is the mower in proper register? It is very important.

We sold an old mower like that and we never had a problem with the pitman sticks. Maybe try mowing more often. You could try to fabricate a piece of steel or iron instead of wood!!

i know that my bull gear & all that are in good shape--my thought being something ain't right or she wouldn't be bindeing up--my fear with going to a steel pitman stick would be tearing up my innards?????gear wise---what are your thoughts????? PS--if i could get this right i would mow more---of course a couple of dry days would be nice too

well I do not know what the problem is but I do know that you want the wood pitman in there so that you do not break the other things. jack up the tires and rotate them. Maybe you have something getting caught in the bull gear casuing it to bind up and break the pitman? We had a ball bearing out of there rear of our Farmall A and it would get lodged in the bull gear from time to time and stop the tractor.
Just a thought.
