I have a tractor with the stack broken off at the manifold. It is very rusted. Which is why it broke off. How do I get the part of the stack that is rusted and still in the manifold out of the manifold? It looks like it is all rusted together. Thanks in advance. Chris

Thanks for the advice everyone. There was just enough of a lip of stack left to be hit with a chisel. I also cut two grooves with a hacksaw. With a little bit of effort it came out in two pieces with no damage to the threads in the manifold! CC

I had the same trouble with my super c. When I got the peice of pipe out there was not enough metal left to use a tap to clean up treads. So I pounded my new pipe it tight and made sure it was strait and welded a bead around it with a nickel cast rod. That was last winter and it is still holding. much cheaper than a new manifold.

If any part of the stack is still sticking up you can use a hammer and a very blunt chisel to strike the side of the pipe and collapse it inward enough so that you can start working a prying tool of some sort down between the pipe and manifold. The pipe should be quite thin if it is rusted that bad and should peel out fairly easily. Be careful that you do not damage the threads in the manifold. After you get the pipe out you may need to obtain a pipe tap of the proper size to clean out the threads, or you may luck out and be able to screw in a new pipe with no trouble.

I did exactly as Rusty described, but first I cut two opposing grooves with a hacksaw blade on the inside of the pipe, carefully stopping before I got into the threads. (I had removed the manifold and held it in a vise). That way, when I hammered it inwards with a small cold chisel, I broke the remaining pieces into two sections. My Farmall Cub has a 1" NPT pipe, so that was the tap I used to clean up the manifold threads. A piece of 1" black iron pipe is your replacement, although if you could find a piece of stainless steel it would be pretty slick.

You could probably use a sandblaster, to loosen the rust a bit, but you may need a new manifold. If you need a new manifold, I know a place to get one, drop me an email.
