Never seen one with "special" cast into it. Have seen a few "sample" castings. The story I heard on them is that IH would ask new suppliers to provide some sample parts for evaluation. "Sample" would be cast into them. If they checked out, they got used in production.

Maybe "special" has a similar explanation.

Terry: I checked all the info I have at hand and came up with nothing regarding your question. My brother has a couple of very specialized reference sources, but I haven't heard from him yet. In the meantime, I think Harold H probably has hit the nail on the head with his response.

Don't have an answer for you, but just out of curiousity, can you post some ID info from your tractor? The block's casting number (behind the oil filter), the engine's serial number (above the distributer), and the tractor's serial number (from the seat box). Maybe we can find something...

Terry,
Checked casting marks on mine this morning, both are 354898 blocks. 1st was cast 4-25-X ('52) and is still R1 (Rev level 1). 2nd was cast 4-13-Z ('54) and is R2. No 'Special' or 'Sample' on either block. Just casting number, Firing Order 1-3-4-2; then below all that, 'L' and the date code. I also see 2 raised squares, and on the R2 block, an extra set of 4 screw heads at the lower right corner.

Just guessing, but your engine might have been replaced with one from the parts department. Parts replacement engines often have different features from the original tractor engine so they can be used for multipal applications, ie; tractors, combines, hay balers, power units, construction equipment, etc. I have never personally seen the word "special" cast in the block, but that is the best educated guess I can make. Anybody else have other ideas?
