Seal and Paint Suggestions

Hello All,

I'm replacing all the gaskets and seals on my H that I am fixing up and wondered if anyone has any tips for replacing the rear crankshaft seal. I have the engine out of the tractor. Also, when painting the tractor, I know almost everything is SUPPOSED to be painted red but I wanted to leave things like hoses and wires unpainted to sort of set them off. I am not looking for technically correct restoration but just a nice looking job when I get through. I'm not wanting to offend the purists but I want to add a few minor touches to set the tractor off a little. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks, Tommy

I replaced the rear seal on my Super H. I believe it drips a little, but is hard to tell from the oil pan in that area. I did not replace the metal holder for the seal, which I later found out probably should have been replaced. There are other gaskets in that area, and also two rubber plugs that fit under the oil pan that you need to replace. I don't paint the distributer cap or the wiring, or any other rubber parts such as the gearshift knob, hoses and belts. The tractor is completely stripped and all small parts are painted individually. IH did production, not detail. You can do a better job than they did. Please don't paint the lights black!! Even though those added after the tractor was purchased probably were, along with the starter.

I just re-painted my '51 H in June, and i left my wires black, my carb un-painted (simply makes it easier to work on), and I bought on Ebay some fender extensions for it (a real knee saver!!). Main thing is that you like the way that it ends up, I personally don't stay awake at night worrying about something not being exactly as the book says. Enjoy! ---Jeff
