I could use some help in figuring what tractor would suit me best. I have a super M narrow front but bought more acreage & need something bigger. I also had back surgery & the M beats me to death (too much bouncing up & down). I will be mowing around 50 acres & doing chores, moving hay etc. I think something around 80 - 100 hp would suit me best & want to be able to put a loader on it later. One thing I dont know too much about is ride. Since having my back cut on ride is pretty important & I can really only compare to the M or other old farmalls. I have been considering the 856 or 756. Ive ruled out the 1066 because it sounds like it would use a lot of fuel for my needs & I dont really need a cab at this point. Also was wondering if you can install an air ride seat on any of the older tractors. Ive been mulling this over for months & its time to do something. I would appreciate any help you guys could give me. Thanks

Some thing no one has said anything about is tires. I have a 706 and a 756 both ride good I have 18.4 38 and 7.5 x 15 on the 756. !4.9 x 38 and 11 x 15on the 706. I have riden on a 105 white with 18.4 x 38 radials and 11x 15 and it rode much easier. The radials have more flotation.

gorilla: In my lifetime I have worked tractors all the way from a W4 to some of the newest John Deere, CaseIH and Kubota. To me the most comfortable tractors on a long day are 56 series IH with 06 and 66 close behind. Some will say no difference in the three, and I wouldn't argue very strongly. Of those three series the tractors I had were 504, 656 and 1066. If I recall correctly all three had the same seat, but 656 just seemed to have the controls better positioned. I have driven other 56 series tractors and my vote is give them the edge. I am 6'2" and a bit over 200 lbs.

Thanks, I was leaning toward the 856. I have read a lot of good things on here about them but wasnt too sure how good the seats/ride was. I love my old M and plan to keep it but just too much bouncing up & down especially mowing. How big a bush hog will an 856 handle? I wanted something that would handle a 15 ft.

I pull a 15ft with my 756 on a steep hill the front end will get a little light, other than that it does fine.

At 47 yrs. I`ve had 4 back surgeries and a hip replacment and can get pretty stoved up at times . I have a 706 that rides real nice and I can stay on it all day . I have differant utility models and 1 old pan seat and it kills me to stay on them to long . As long as you stay with the larger [ row crop ] style tractor you will be happy . Most tractors in a chore situation will not use that much fuel .

you are on the right track. I use a Hydro 86 and a Farmall 656. Both have flat seats with wrap-around arm rests. I support a lot of my upper body weight on my elbow and get along quite well. I have driven a 1066 for a friend that the seat is pretty well worn out and still it is not hard on my back, I'm not sure what the reson is. I bought a Gleaner F combine and it nearly killed me driving it home 8 miles.

Sounds like you are thinkin bout right in the hp range, but don't let the fuel use scare you away from a good deal on a 1066. I have a 1066 for a chore tractor and fuel use isn't as bad as one would think. I will say that when I work it hard all day, which isn't often, it'll drink it's share. Won't hold a candle to the way the 6030 JD I used to disk with would drink it.

No dout, I could get by with half the hp 90% of the time, but all that weight and pull comes in handy more time than you'd think.

I'm not using mine to make a living, so I don't keep up with fuel cost per hour, but it isn't costing me enough to swap it for a smaller tractor.

Mitch

Are the 1066's as manuverable as the open station tractors like the 856 etc? Another thing I was thinking about was the expense of maintaining the a/c which would be a must with a cab. Also how well does a loader work with 1066's etc? Thanks for the help.

the larger frame tractors (9-1066, probably 856) aren't as nimble as the mid frame(706, 826) which in turn aren't as nimble as the 656 size. i have a 1456, 966, 826 and many others, but my loaders are on 656s. i wouldn't mind a loader on the 826, wouldn't want one on the bigger tractors. my 966 is too clumsy to try using with a loader in close quarters.
