I have a 1945 Farmall A and I am confused on what type of oil I should put in it. Some people say 30W other 10W- 30 and 15W - 40 what oil is right. Also what brand is the best for these tractors. Thanks for the help!!

Hi Walt, When I restored a Farmall A I used 10W30
in the engine after I had installed new sleeves,
pistons, valves, guides and new bearings. I did the engine in the winter months and when spring came I installed the plow and made 3 or 4 passes
across the garden. I noticed the oil pressure
was dropping as the engine was getting to operating temperature. I pulled off to the side
and drained the oil and installed 30wt oil. The oil pressure held after that. This engine and tractor were in sad shape when I purchased it, it is amazing as to how much abuse these tractors
endured. I would only use multi-duty oil in the winter. Good Luck, Hal

ANY modern oil is gonna be better than what was available when the tractor was new.

For hot weather use I would use the 15-40, and the 10-30 for cold weather use.

If the tractor has not used detergent oil, there is a risk of loosening a bunch of sludge, so several oil changes, a few operating hours apart, is a good idea, to keep the loosened sludge flushed out of the crankcase.
