Took about an HR tonight and fiddled with it some more.
Cleaned and lubed the advance wheights on the dist. Put in the new points, condencer. Gapped them.
New rotor and cap. Put in a new set of plugs.
I cant find my timing light. Havent used it for 2 moves so could be any where. Might have to buy a new one just to find the old one. You know how that goes.
I just set it back the way it was.
Crossed my fingers and hit the starter.
She stated up with a little choke.

Let her warm up a bit then moved the throttle lever. She still stumbles alot. BUT There is a noticable improvement from before.
I found that it runs kinda ok with the choke pulled out. Does not stumble or die.
I take that as a good sign.
Gives me hope that after the carb rebuild and proper adjusting it may be ok.
I priced a valve job today and it about $400 so I got my fingers crossed.

Kelly don't forget the heat rizer in the exhaust manifold no one else has said anything about it but the 460 was much worse than the 560 but both had to have a clean exhaust manifold so the heat could get to the carb and the rizer has to work. I you fix the rizer and don't clean the manifold you only did half a job. All the other ideas are good but I would check the rizer and manifold. Getting the 4 cap screws out is a bad job but then I done more times than I could count never did and engine over haul without doing the manifold.

Kelly do you have a dyno? if not there is another way to check out, and find problems in carbs and igntion,, You can advance the timing,, to where the rpms drop, or sounds like it is under a load, it acts like a dyno, and if there is a misfire, in the igntion,,you should be able to find it. Look at the plugs,, are they black, brown, or white? after you run it for a while,,,, or work the engine. Like I said, the venturi may be the cause,, these engines,, have a huge intake, and intake runners, so you have lots of flow,, the problem,, is that the carb is not pulling the correct amount of vacuum through the carb when it accelerates, sure,, you may be able to make it run rich wit the load adjustment, it is the sudden drop in vacuum in the manifold when the carb opens up to WOT. I used a venturi out of an M, a lot smaller than the 460-560, well any IH 6 cyl carb, if that dont work,, VALVES. Chad

Kelly,

Don't know if you have checked this yet, but check the opening to the sediment bowl, if you have one. I put a new one on my Super M some years ago--a generic one from TSC--and this tractor ran like crap a long time. Couldn't figure out this aggravation until one day when the tank was empty, I removed the bowl and found the answer. The port that treads into the fule tank was nearly completely sealed due to a manufacturing flaw that left excess metal behind. I drilled it out and that ended the problem. I should have checked this way back when I bought it, but when something is fresh of the shelf, I tend to assume that it is ready for service. Shame on me :)

I had a similar thing on a tractor with an in-line filter. Full tank of gas the tractor ran OK. As the fuel load approached 1/4 full it wouldn't run worth beans. I always thought the carb was messed up even though I could find nothing wrong. I dorked around for several years with a motor I could not tweak in. One day took the in-line filter off. Adjusted the carby and it's run great since.

That is exactly the reason I do not like in-line filters.

Hey, Kelly
If it runs better with the choke pulled out doesn't that point to a fuel/air problem rather than an ignition prob? Maybe air leaking in after the carb? Have you tried the unlit propane torch sprayed around the inlet manifold thing?

I'd bet a wooden nickel it's a clogged up carby.

I would check for a leak in the intake as well.

From what your posting it sounds just like a 560 I worked on a couple years ago.
Finally pulled the manifold(s) and found that the exhaust side had rotted out and was leaking into the intake side.
Pretty common problem but not too spendy to fix.
Just make sure if you end up getting a new exhaust manifold that you bolt the two pieces together on a flat surface and then take the assembly to a machine shop and have them plane the surfaces that attach to the head.
Otherwise the old and new won't match and you'll end up with the same problem again!

Yes it does. The ignition stuff was what I just did 1st. I havent checked the propane yet. But I will.
Maybe today if I get off work at a reasonable time.
